German as a foreign language PDF Print E-mail

In kindergarten and primary school, it is sometimes necessary for French-speaking children to have language training in German as a foreign language. We offer individual solutions.

In “Sekundarstufe I” (secondary school, grade 6 to 10), an increasing number of international pupils alongside the German children make additional educational options necessary: the subject German as a foreign language (“Deutsch als Fremdsprache” – DaF) has been introduced recently. It is taught in addition to the regular German lessons and is designed for bilingual and multilingual children whose mother tongue is not German or for students whose knowledge of German in written or oral language shows deficits. We work in small groups at three different levels, in which the teacher can closely respond to the different learning needs and thus foster the students individually. The goal is to communicate language skills (listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing) and the necessary linguistic resources (vocabulary, means of verbal expression, syntax, morphology) – depending on the level. This is the basis for successful learning in other subjects. Upon successful completion of the third level, the child moves up into the regular German group.

Besides the “DaF” classes, we offer a two hour “Heranführkurs”, which is intended to supplement the regular German as well as the “DaF”-lessons and help those German students who need assistance, particularly in the written language.
